On scene, they found heavy smoke and fire in the back of the residence. No one was home at the time of the fire. Three cats and a dog were rescued and taken to the Humane Society of Midland County.

Smoke from the home on 3407 West Chippewa River Road in Shepherd belonging to Bud Smith rises up through the trees. Smith was working on remodeling a bathroom in the home when his girlfriend, Andrea Nartker, alerted him to flames creeping up the chimney. "There was smoke real quick," Smith said. Lee, Midland, Homer and Shepherd township fire departments all responded to the blaze.
